Get to know your Windows updates!

If you have a Windows PC/laptop as your University device, you will have noticed you are getting more notifications to keep your device up-to-date with Windows updates. This is due to the new requirements set out by Cyber Essentials, that all University devices install the latest updates from Microsoft, within a 14 day window.

The most effective way to keep your devices up-to-date is to turn them off and on again at least twice a week. Powering down your laptop/PC also enhances its performance.

You may also have noticed new on-screen messaging that gives you a time frame to pick up any new updates.

IMPORTANT! We recommend you restart your device a minimum of twice a week.

To manually check for Windows Updates:

  1. Select the Windows Menu, and choose 'Settings'.
  2. From the Settings menu, select 'Update & Security'.
  3. If there are any Windows updates to install, you will see 'Updates available'. Follow the instructions on screen to download and install these.
  4. If you are up to date with Windows updates, you will see 'You're up to date'. You can use the 'Check for updates' button to ensure you are fully up to date with any available Windows updates.

If you are having any issues with installing updates, you can connect your laptop to any of the available ethernet cables on campus. This will ensure updates are downloaded and installed correctly.
