Additionally, applicants who have completed applicable courses in selected countries and institutions within are able to use their qualification, this is accepted as proof of English for student visa sponsorship purposes and applicants will not require an additional SELT. The qualification must have been completed within the last 5 years.
You do not need to prove your knowledge of English if you’re from one of the following countries or territories, or you’ve completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in one of them:
We currently accept qualifications from the following countries in place of an English Language Level Test
For a list of these qualifications and the grading score required please go to our country specific pages.
Where we accept a qualification from high school in place of an English Language level test this qualification needed to be within the last 10 years to be acceptable on its own.
If you achieved your high school qualification more than 10 years ago we will require you to provide further evidence your English Language ability has been maintained.
The maximum validity we can accept a high school qualification in combination with further evidence in 20 years.
Where your qualification is over 10 years but still within 20 then you can provide either a medium of instruction letter (MOI) confirming during the last 5 years you completed your university education at a recognised education provider taught in English. Or an employer’s reference confirming the use of English Language in the workplace within the last 5 years.
If your qualification is older than 20 years or your degree was taught over 5 years ago, or you are unable to provide a valid employment reference then you will need to consider taking an alternative English Language test such as Oxford International English Language Level Test.
The following table details the stand alone English Language Level tests we accept. The scores below are aligned to CEFR to ensure applicants requiring a student visa are able to satisfy UKVI requirements.
