Networking event puts the spotlight on training initiatives

Local businesses gathered at the University of Wolverhampton’s Elite Centre for Manufacturing Skills (ECMS) at its £120 million Springfield Campus recently for a networking event with the spotlight on training.

The Training Associates Conference hosted a diverse set of training organisations that deliver courses from the University’s premises or online to a network of employers.

The Elite Centre for Manufacturing Skills is an employer-led training facility in the Black Country, which supports the UK industry in upskilling and multi-skilling the workforce.  It has a particular focus on developing technical skills and knowledge in engineering, manufacturing and casting but is also able to provide support to a variety of other industry sectors if required.

Companies in attendance included 3D Print Academy, Ultimate Care Midlands Ltd, iCME, Imagine Training, Flat World Works, The Creative Chain, CEDAR Education, SPECTRO/AMETEK, PLT Training Ltd and the Technology Supply Chain,

Trevor Codner, Business Development Manager at the ECMS, said: “It was wonderful to bring all of our Training Associates together following two years of virtual and online teaching and training delivery during the pandemic.”

Laura Chambers, Flat World Works in Wolverhampton, said: “I think it’s really important to support local businesses and to see how we can support each other to build everyone up. One of the key things I’ve taken away from today is that we’ve been able to find out new things about what everyone is offering and potentially how we can integrate them and support our own networks through the ECMS.

“We have been running some business webinars through the ECMS about cyber security and staying safe online, which has shown to be crucial throughout and following the pandemic as more and more people are engaging online.  The building here at Springfield is beautiful, the technology is modern and it’s definitely something we are going to utilise in the future.”

During the event Karen Turner of Imagine Training was presented with a gift from Shane Kelly, University of Wolverhampton Racing Team Pro-Driver and Team Mentor, to thank her for her significant support to the ECMS Project over the past few years.  Imagine Training had been the first company to join the ECMS as a Training Associate Organisation in 2019.

The Elite Centre has two main centres as part of its Hub and Spoke model. The Hub is based at the University of Wolverhampton’s Springfield Campus and the National Foundry Training Centre is based in Tipton with both locations offer training facilities as conference and exhibition spaces.

ECMS is funded by the Black Country Local Enterprise and Midland Engine Partnership.
