Top award for LGBT staff network

30/03/2017

A support network at the University of Wolverhampton has received a top award recognising the institution’s commitment to equality.

The University scooped the West Midlands Network Group of the Year at Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index (WEI) Midlands Awards 2017.

The award recognised the University’s commitment to enhancing the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) student experience through its staff network.

Dr Sammy Li, Chair of the LGBT Staff Network, said: “This recognition highlights the role of the LGBT Staff Network in promoting an inclusive campus environment to make staff, students and stakeholders from different sections of society feel welcomed at our University. The Network Group of the Year award further strengthens our commitment to advancing inclusion and diversity in Wolverhampton after the University achieved a very successful year in the Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index 2017.”

Dean of Students, Jon Elsmore, added: “We are working to expand the number of LGBT-themed public events held at the University, raising awareness of the unique experiences and history of LGBT people.”

The University will now work with Wolverhampton Homes, which won the West Midlands Public Sector Employer of the Year at the ceremony, to liaise with City of Wolverhampton Council and other local organisations to deliver equality public events on campus and in the city.

The award ceremony took place at KPMG in Leicester on 23 March 2017.
