Procurement team goes a long way to secure national award

The University of Wolverhampton has been short-listed for an award at this year’s National GO Awards 2016/17 – a ceremony which showcases the very best that public sector procurement has to offer.

The Procurement team, made up of five members of staff, has gained finalist status for the GO Procurement Team of the Year Award for improving, integrating and redefining the University’s procurement systems and procedures over the last 18 months – saving the organisation in excess of £1 million.

This year’s finalists were chosen by an influential panel of judges, all key figures within procurement in the UK, and included Sally Collier, Chief Executive Officer at the Crown Commercial Service and Ainslie McLaughlin, Director, Procurement and Commercial at the Scottish Government.

Fiona Ward, Head of Procurement at the University of Wolverhampton, said:  “We’re delighted to have been short-listed for this award. Team working is pivotal to the success of public procurement and the GO Team of the Year Award recognises the power and potential of a focused and unified approach to procurement initiatives.

“Over the past 18 months, we have collectively strengthened communications and worked collaboratively with other internal and external stakeholders to provide an efficient service delivery to our customer base.  An independent Procurement Maturity Assessment (PMA) identified that we are now operating above average for a University of our size – an achievement we’re really proud of - and we entrench Value for Money in all aspects of the University’s spend.”

Achievements over the past 18 months include capturing student benefits within tender documentation, focus on improving internal communication for staff by providing procurement information for inductions, creating new web and intranet pages, developing a procurement newsletter and introducing a dedicated Twitter feed to engage with suppliers and other public sector organisations.

In addition to this, the University has massively increased its PMA score - which provided a baseline to measure the improvements, as well as a benchmark score against similar institutions – with an exceptional rise of 42% going from 11% to 53%, compared with an average sector increase of 18%.
