Top civil servant to visit campus

The top civil servant in Bangladesh is visiting the University of Wolverhampton as part of a training course focused on government reform.

The Honourable Cabinet Secretary, Muhammad Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, will visit the Telford Campus from 22 to 24 May 2012.

Twenty civil servants from Bangladesh are currently taking part in a six-week professional development course, Managing At The Top Phase 2 (MATT 2), run by the University’s Centre for International Development and Training (CIDT).

The initiative, funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) in the UK and the Government of Bangladesh, aims to equip the participants with experience and knowledge to deliver civil service reforms in their country.

The civil servants will present their findings in front of the Hon’ble Cabinet Secretary, who will also meet with the University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Geoff Layer on May 23.

The reforms the civil servants are currently concerned with focus on improving the markets in perishable fruits, converting city waste into energy, improving the working conditions of women handloom weavers and improving community health provision in rural areas of Bangladesh.

Rachel Roland, Deputy Head of CIDT, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the most senior civil servant in Bangladesh here at Telford Campus. His attention to the learning achieved by his colleagues shows how significant the government believes this reform programme to be. He will have a chance to meet some of organisations in the public and private sector who have generously given their time and support to stimulate ideas for improvements to the reform process in Bangladesh.”

The group were recently visited by MP for Telford, David Wright, and have also visited a variety of West Midlands-based businesses and local councils in Wolverhampton, Worcester and Redditch as part of the programme.

CIDT, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, is a self-financing, non-profit making centre within the University of Wolverhampton.
