New research centre launched

The Centre for Developmental and Applied Research in Education (CeDare) will be based at the University’s Walsall Campus.

The official launch took place on Wednesday, 11 February 2009 in the University’s WN building, which opened last year. Professor Sally Glen, Pro Vice-Chancellor Academic and Professor Jo Allan, Associate Dean and Director of CeDARE, launched the new centre.

Professor Jo Allan said: “CeDARE has been formed thanks to fantastic developments in research activity at the School of Education. These includes the appointment of professors, readers, research fellows and research assistants, the creation of a doctor of education programme and a significant increases in commissioned research.

“We are delighted to be opening this new centre, which aims to promote high quality developmental and applied research of regional, national and international standing.

“The Centre offers a forum for researchers, academics, policy makers and practitioners to exchange ideas, engage in informed dialogue and build capacity to investigate significant issues that educationalist face today. The Centre is rapidly establishing itself as a high quality leader of evaluation and impact studies and is at the cutting edge of multi media dissemination to promote the effective transfer of research into practice and policy.”

Examples of projects and publications carried out within CeDare was showcased at the launch.

CeDARE recently won a research bid for the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) which analyses the impact of information technology on initial teacher training programmes.

The centre will build on the achievements of the School of Education, the Institute for Learning Enhancement (ILE) and colleagues working in subject-related pedagogic research across the University.
