Art students take exhibition on tour

08/02/2018

University of Wolverhampton art students have taken their work on tour to Sutton Coldfield.

Thirty-eight students studying for Master’s degree courses in Fine Art and Art & Design by Research and degree courses in Fine Art, have put their work on display in the former British Home Stores (BHS) shop in Sutton Coldfield’s Gracechurch Centre.

The ‘If ifs and ands…’ freeExhibition is open from 12.00 midday until 5.00 pm every day until Sunday 11th February 2018.

The artists’ work explores histories and identities, realism to abstraction, place, space and site specificity as well as revealing a plethora of contemporary themes and questions.

Dr Dean Kelland, Course Leader in MA Fine Art and MA Fine Art & Design in Research, said: “It’s crucial for artists to experience new places and new audiences which is why it’s really important to explore new locations to display work.  Not only is it great for the students’ CVs, it takes them out of their familiar, comfort zone whilst at the same time, increases awareness of the talent the University produces and the courses that are available.

“The group of artists in this exhibition demonstrate that in a climate aimed at suppressing the creative voice there is no substitute for the power of production.  The students have really raised their game and delivered an intriguing and diverse exhibition that articulates the strength of the student groups we have here in the Wolverhampton School of Art.”

Current MA Fine Art student, Tod Jones, said: "The BHS Sutton Coldfield 2018 Exhibition “If ifs and ands…” provided us with a great opportunity to experiment more with our art works in a completely new environment. This was a perfect fit for my practice as I work with site specific sculpture.

“I ended up producing a brand new piece of work for the exhibition and generating a whole new range of ideas that can later inform my studies.”
