Learning is a piece of cake as centre celebrates first birthday

Celebrations were in order at University Centre Telford (UTC) when it celebrated its first birthday recently.

Created as a partnership between the University of Wolverhampton and Telford College of Arts and Technology (TCAT), the University Centre Telford has been supported by Telford and Wrekin Council and offers a variety of courses as well as an advice and information centre for potential students, and a business support function.

In its first year the Centre has engaged with nearly 700 potential learners; providing information, advice and guidance on further and higher education programmes, supporting people in applying for university and hosting taster sessions and workshops to showcase faculty expertise.

Offering an innovative education hub based on the third floor of the library building at Southwater One, it has two teaching rooms and is equipped with 15 computers allowing access to University/TCAT systems.  In partnership with TCAT, the Centre is delivering a portfolio of part time FE, undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications which enable learners to step back into education locally.

The University Centre Telford celebrates its first birthday.

Dr Mary Mahoney, Head of the Centre for Lifelong Learning, said: “It’s been a great year for the university’s first distributed learning centre.  Working with TCAT has allowed us to support learners to progress into higher education and, with the support of faculty colleagues, respond to local demand by running additional programmes in Telford.”

Jackie Dunne, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Access and Lifelong Learning) from the University of Wolverhampton, thanked university colleagues and partners from Telford College of Arts & Technology (TCAT) and Telford and Wrekin Council for helping to make the Centre’s first year such a success.
