Students get ‘hands-on’ at business conference

31/03/2016

Students from the University of Wolverhampton recently had the chance to put their theory into practice when they were given the opportunity to manage a business conference at Greenhous stadium.

Katie Minchin and Erica Daniel, who are currently studying BA Events and Venue Management, held the conference for 80 delegates and guest speaker, the MP for Shrewsbury, Daniel Kawczynski.

The event, which was organised by Shropshire Business Partnership (SBP), offered the students the ideal opportunity of hands-on experience, with the chance of running the event, as well as analysing the performance afterwards.

SBP was founded by Dr Roy Broad in 2012 and is a not for profit networking organisation.

The organisation is an independent network of 440 firms in the business and professional services sector, who meet on a regular basis with guest speakers including Google, John Timpson and BBC Shropshire.

Katie Minchin said: “This was a great opportunity to get involved with the planning and implementation of a business conference where attention to detail and making sure delegates feel they are getting value for money is critical.

“By actively networking with the delegates, we have been offered further opportunities for work experience in events management and will use this to enhance our portfolio of practical events and venue management experience.

“We will be evaluating the feedback responses from the delegates and making recommendations to the Shropshire Business Partnership on how they might improve their events in the future.”

Conference Chairman, Paul Bennett said: “It was great to have the students from the University of Wolverhampton with us and we look forward to working with them on future events.”

BA (Hons) Event and Venue Management at the University of Wolverhampton is a popular degree choice for students seeking an events management portfolio of knowledge and skills, offering future careers in the events industry on a national and international basis.
