Student Win for City of Secrets

27/06/2016

An international student from the University of Wolverhampton is feeling thrilled after winning a competition to showcase his artistic ability.

Daniel Unger, who is a designer from Germany, decided to make the temporary move to the UK in 2015 and is currently studying for an MA in Digital and Visual Communications.

The competition, which has now finished, was set up by the Mander shopping centre in Wolverhampton. The centre is currently undergoing a major redevelopment to give the building a new 21st century aesthetic.

The competition asked entrants to design 2D based artwork which could be installed upon a selection of hoardings within the centre.

The artwork needed to be eye-catching, family friendly, site specific and respond to the theme of “City of Secrets”.

Daniel decided to enter the competition with the possibility of getting his work exhibited after having received an e-mail from university staff about the event.

Daniel’s design builds on the brief of City of Secrets, with his artwork being heavily influenced by the Outsider Art movement. The work also tries to recapture the way that Daniel sees Wolverhampton as a designer and as an artist; a secret version of Wolverhampton that only he is able to perceive.

Daniel said: “I‘m very excited about having been chosen as a winner in this contest and being able to show my artwork to a huge audience.”

No set date has been given for when the artwork is due to be put on display as of yet, however, more details will be unveiled in the near future.
