University signs up to support Armed Forces in Staffordshire
The University of Wolverhampton has pledged its commitment to supporting the Armed Forces in Staffordshire by officially signing up to join its Community Covenant – working with local communities to provide education and training courses in the region.
The Staffordshire Armed Forces’ Community Covenant, which complements the Armed Force Covenant, is a commitment to support the Armed Forces community and to promote better understanding and awareness of issues that affect them. It also recognises sacrifices made by service personnel and their families and encouraging integration between services and civilian communities.
The University has joined Staffordshire County Council, District and Borough Councils as well as voluntary and community groups and the civilian community of Staffordshire. Other signatories include Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Consortium of Infrastructure Organisations, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, West Midlands Reserve Forces and Cadets Association, Staffordshire Police, Staffordshire Primary Care and NHS Trust as well as colleges in the area and Staffordshire University.
Geoff Layer, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “We’re delighted to have been invited to become a signatory for this important joint community venture. We are committed to taking an active role in our communities and developing opportunities for people.
“We have a long history of engagement with the Armed Forces and our aim is to provide a range of support from tailored courses through to business start-up and employment opportunities for dependants of service personnel. We have also appointed an Armed Forces Co-ordinator to be a key point of contact for anyone making enquiries.”
Alan White is the Cabinet Member for Health, Care and Wellbeing at Staffordshire County Council and a former member of the Armed Forces himself.
Alan explained that he was delighted to see the University sign up to the Community Covenant and said: “As a long-standing supporter of the Armed Forces we are all very proud to be part of the Staffordshire Armed Forces Community Covenant.
“The aim of the community covenant is to encourage local communities to support the armed forces in their area and promote understanding and awareness among the public of issues affecting the armed forces community.
“Staffordshire has always had a strong connection with its armed forces, with large bases in Stafford and Lichfield. Staffordshire recently welcomed further personnel and their families to the area and we hope that by encouraging other partners to sign up to the community covenant we will further strengthen our existing relationships.”
The University has a dedicated HM Armed Forces webpage which gives service personnel all the information they need to know about University courses and funding. It has also developed a business start-up course which has been specifically designed to assist service personnel in setting up a business. For more information contact: email@example.com
