Learning and Teaching Cluster

The objective of the Business School Learning and Teaching Research Cluster is to share our current Learning and Teaching related research and practice, and to find ways to collaborate on future Learning and Teaching research projects together.

This cluster focuses on important, topical and evolving challenges in Learning and Teaching, in the Higher Education sector. The cluster brings together likeminded colleagues to share common interests. Our cluster is a mixture of those new to research (PhD students just starting out, colleagues just starting out, and/or Early Career Researchers) and more experienced researchers.

You do not need to be on a research contract to join this cluster – all are welcome.

You may well already be in a few Research Clusters/Hubs for your own discipline but you are all very welcome to join us in this one too.

This cluster is led by Prof. Jenni Jones and links directly into the Faculty Learning and Teaching group (LaTRiSS – Learning and Teaching Research in Social Sciences.)

Key Areas

The strategic aims of the Learning and Teaching cluster are to:

  • Bring together and provide a supportive and stimulating collegial context for all researchers to share their ideas, practice and research together.
  • To conduct and promote responsible research in line with the principles of Responsible Research in Business and Management Network.
  • To attract internal and external research funding for collaborative research
  • To promote innovative work among its members’ spheres of specialism and support their career development.
  • To engage with the wider internal and external HE community to promote good excellent learning and teaching practices.

To feed into and conduct inter-disciplinary research across the Faculty, and wider university.

New research projects and ideas:

Current UWBS L&T projects:

  1. Employability - better understanding the impact of the extra curricula activities that we do on student learning e.g. Guest Speakers, Bootcamps, Trips, Conferences etc (led by Emma Edwards)
  2. The 'pracademic' – better understanding how we support the induction of those new to teaching from a professional non-teaching background (led by Jenni Jones, Alex Phillips, Olu Shokunbi)
  3. Use of digital/use of AI in the classroom – what are student expectations/experiences? How can we meet their differing digital needs e.g. international students? (led by Kai Mai, Lola Shonubi)

Future UWBS L&T projects:

  1. How better to encourage the engagement of international students (lead TBC)
  2. Employability - better understanding the skills developed through P/T PG courses (particularly PSRBs?) and the impact on career progression (led by Nicky Adams, Emma Williams TBC)
  3. Wellbeing/Pastoral Support for mature students - better understanding the differing needs of mature students and what support they really need (led by Nicky Adams, Emma Williams TBC)
  4. Measuring what we value/measuring impact (lead TBC)

  1. How do students navigate on-line resources for their assessment (led by Jenni Jones in connection with the Library) - ongoing
  2. Lesson study – working in a triad to create a more inclusive classroom (led by Adam Vasco, with Nat Rishton, Kai Ma and Lizana Oberholzer) - ongoing
  3. QAA project looking at improving the classroom learning experience through collaborative observation - the project participants comprised 16 academic teaching staff and 24 students from within Birmingham City University, Loughborough and the University of Wolverhampton.
