Commonwealth Games selection for talented Mimi

16/03/2018

A talented University of Wolverhampton graduate is jumping for joy after being selected to represent Team England at the Commonwealth Games.

Mimi Cesar will be competing in rhythmic gymnastics at Gold Coast 2018 in April.

Gold medal hope Mimi, from Sutton Coldfield, combined her training with a BA (Hons) Sports Studies degree, and was supported with a Sports Scholarship from the University.

Rhythmic gymnastics combines elements of ballet, gymnastics and dance with equipment including a hoop, ball, club or ribbon.

The 23-year-old is a Team England ambassador, Birmingham 2022 supporter and three-time British senior all-around champion.

Mimi, who graduated with First Class Honours in 2017, said: “It’s so exciting to be able to tell everyone I have made the Gold Coast team and I can’t wait to get out there and compete for Team England. I’ve been training really hard over the last 18 months with Gold Coast completely in the focus. I know that my time is now in my gymnastics career, it’s been the best it’s ever been and I know that I have the potential to bring home that medal.”

Mimi Cesar and her team-mate Stephani Sherlock are returning to the Commonwealth Games stage after competing at Glasgow 2014, while Hannah Martin will be making her Team England debut in April.

Mimi added: “Rhythmic gymnastics is completely self-funding so the University sports scholarship really helps me with travel to competitions and buying equipment. My tutors are also supportive of the time I need to train and travel, and I’ve also received physio and some strength and conditioning sessions at the University.”

The Commonwealth Games will take place on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, between 4 and 15 April 2018, and the rhythmic gymnastics squad will compete at Coomera Indoor Sports Centre.
