Rathnakar Andugula, after qualifying as a medical doctor in India, went on to pursue his MD in Preventive and Social Medicine. He worked as a primary care physician and as an academic in various WHO accredited medical schools in India. He worked as associate lecturer for DE Montfort University, as a programme manager and senior lecturer for their PGCert in Managing Health and Social Care for a associate college in London for more than five years. While working as a HPL in the University of South Wales, he was the module leader for three modules for their MSc in Public Health programme.

Dr.Rathnakar has MSc in Public Health from University of South Wales, and an alumnus of London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He worked for the NHS North East Essex, Public Health Wales (Zero hours contract) and worked for the World Health Organisation Country office for India as a Surveillance Medical Officer.

Research Activities: 

  • Public Health project (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine): “Mental ill health effects of extreme weather events and other natural hazards on children”: A health policy report. Project approved and grade awarded. This is a literature based health policy report with quality appraisal of intervention studies using Graphical Appraisal Tool for Epidemiological studies and quality assessment of qualitative studies using NICE guidance was done in collaboration and supervision from Dr. Helen Hogan, clinical lecturer and course director, MSc Public Health, LSHTM; Prof. Dr. Virginia Murray, Head, Extreme Events and Health Protection section of Health Protection Agency, United Kingdom (Now part of Public Health England) and Prof .Dr. Richard Williams, Head of Mental Health Strategy and Consultant Child and Adolescent Mental Health. 

 

  • Dissertation presented during MD in Preventive and Social Medicine: “A study on health profile among adolescents in slums of Visakhapatnam city”. Dissertation approved and grade awarded in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of Medicine in Social and Preventive Medicine, 2000, NTR University of Health Sciences. This is the first original research study on adolescent health in north coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh.  The survey design is cross sectional study with probability proportional to size sampling. The survey questionnaire is adapted from Youth Risk Behaviour Surveillance System (YRBSS) of CDC and additional questions have been added according to the needs of local survey population. Prevalence estimates, chi squared test, logistic regression and Analysis of Variance are done.

Rathnakar has enormous wealth of experience as an academic in the developing as well as developed world. In the UK higher education sector he has been working for more than seven years with different universities (University of Wolverhampton, University of South Wales, DE Montfort University). He has lead modules at the postgraduate and undergraduate levels.

In India, he worked for many WHO Accredited Medical Schools as an academic and as a primary care physician and distict level multipurose health worker training programe (M) in-charge medical officer in the Government's health care sector .

He worked in the NHS North Essex as a senior health trainer and community outreach worker (Alcohol) and as a bank smoking cessation advisor for the Public Health Wales. 

Dr. Rathnakar, has worked for the World Health Organisation's Country Office for India as a Surveillance Medical Officer in the National Polio Surveillance project.
