My name is Phil Currie, and I am a senior lecturer in pre and post-registration education for the Institute of Health.

After leaving school with no qualifications, I started off my medical career as a Royal Navy medical assistant in 1997. After 7 1/2 years, I left the Navy and completed the IHCD paramedic qualification, before gaining employment with the local ambulance service.

I started my academic journey by undertaking a distance learning Dip HE in paramedic science. I worked as a Named Practice Educator for undergraduate paramedic students alongside studying. This role spurred my interest in educating others, and I have been a visiting lecturer for Staffordshire, Coventry and Birmingham City Universities.

Whilst continuing to work in a variety of management and clinical roles within the ambulance service I gained my BSc (Hons) Emergency Practitioner qualification, which led to gaining a position as a trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) within a local hospital. To become a qualified ACP I completed my MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice. As an ACP I've worked mostly in emergency settings, with some experience in acute medicine.

I am an independent and supplementary paramedic prescriber, and I sit as a committee member for the College of Paramedics special interest group in paramedic prescribing.

I started as a full-time senior lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton in December 2020, where I have joined the Advanced Clinical Practice team.

I am the module lead for Health Assessment for Advanced Clinical Practice and I a lecturer on the Clinical reasoning and Leadership and Governance modules.

I am currently progressing on the doctorate by publication route.
