Dr. Peter Collins recently joined the Institute of Health at the University of Wolverhampton in January 2019. Previously he worked as a course leader and senior lecturer Leeds Beckett University’s Carnegie School of Sport for five years (2014-19), as well as a lecturer at Leeds Trinity University (2013-14) and visiting lecturer at Newman University Birmingham (2010-13). Peter’s research primarily focuses on the physical activity, health and development of children and young people. This work has been published in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, as well as presented at international conferences. Peter is also a PhD examiner and supervisor, as well as a reviewer for a number of scientific journals. In Peter’s current role, he leads the Dissertation and Advanced Research Skills modules at post-graduate (Masters) level, alongside his other teaching, research and enterprise responsibilities.

Peter’s research primarily focuses on the physical activity, health and development of children and young people. The title of his PhD thesis was ‘the influence of the built environment on young people’s health and physical activity’. His research ranges from exploring the built and social environmental determinants of children’s physical activity and health, to investigating cross-cultural comparisons in the health and lifestyle habits of young people in the UK and internationally. This work has been published in international peer-reviewed journals, as well as presented at international conferences. Peter currently supervises 3 PhD students and is a PhD’ examiner within the field of Public Health and lifestyle behaviours.

Peter has gained a wealth of experience as an academic at four Higher Education institutions (Newman University Birmingham; Leeds Trinity University; Leeds Beckett University; University of Wolverhampton). In total he has been module leader on 12 different modules serving a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including Masters in Public Health; BSc Physical Activity, Exercise and Health; BSc Public Health; BA Health Studies; BA Physical Education; BSc Sport & Exercise Science; MSc Physical Activity and Health. Peter is currently responsible for leading the Dissertation module and Advanced Research Skills module at post-graduate level.

In addition to his course and module leadership experience, Peter is also an active researcher, publishing numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and both examining and supervising PhD students. He is also an academic personal tutor & dissertation supervisor for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and contributes to the teaching of a number of other modules, ranging from Epidemiology to Health Promotion. His student-centred approach to teaching has been recognised by his students, who nominated him for the ‘Innovative Teacher of the Year’ award at Leeds Beckett University, as well as the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Staff Excellence at the University of Wolverhampton.
