I completed a BSc in Biological Sciences at the University of Birmingham in 2006. During the course of this degree, I became interested in a career in Biomedical Science and completed work experience in a number of local hospitals. Unfortunately, the degree programme I had completed was not an IBMS accredited degree programme, so I then completed a BSc in Biomedical Science at Staffordshire University. Whilst completing this degree, I was fortunate to get a trainee Biomedical Scientist post in haematology at Russells Hall hospital. Whilst completing my Biomedical Science degree I undertook a period of training and completed the IBMS registration portfolio, allowing me to become a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist.

Following on from the completion of the IBMS registration portfolio, I began studying an MSc in Biomedical Science at the University of Chester. Whilst studying, I completed a work-based research project which measured a range of biomarkers in patients with cardiovascular disease. Upon completion of my MSc, a vacancy for a senior Biomedical Scientist arose in the department, which I was successfully appointed to.

In 2015, I was appointed at Walsall Manor hospital as laboratory training officer and senior Biomedical Scientist. During this time I completed the IBMS Certificate of Expert Practice in Training qualification. I was also responsible for supporting placement students through their IBMS registration portfolio, as well as overseeing all of the training in the department.

In November 2016 I moved to the University of Wolverhampton, where I am involved in teaching haematology and transfusion theory and practice.

In 2017, I completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education and Professional Practice at the University of Wolverhampton in order to gain Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. In 2022, I completed a Professional Doctorate in Health and Wellbeing following a Delphi study exploring stakeholder perceptions of the role of the Biomedical Scientist.

I am a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with a number of years experience working in the NHS. I worked as a Biomedical Scientist in haematology and transfusion and participated in the out of hours rota to maintain a 24/7 haematology service.

I worked as a senior Biomedical Scientist, before moving to the role of senior Biomedical Scientist and training officer for the blood sciences laboratory.

In my role as a Senior Biomedical Scientist, I was responsible for stock control and stock replenishment, staff training and competency assessment, completing the departmental UKAS application assay list, applying for IBMS training laboratory status and for supporting students completing their IBMS registration portfolio. I was also involved in shortlisting prospective employment candidates of all grades, as well as interviewing and appraising staff. I was responsible for ensuring the efficient day-to-day running of the laboratory, including maintaining equipment and dealing with analyser faults. During this time, I completed the IBMS Certificate of Expert Practice in Training.

I am currently an IBMS verifier for the Certificate of Competence and Chair of the IBMS Birmingham Branch.
