Garrett is a Chartered & HCPC Registered Counselling Psychologist. He is lead for the Psychology Community Research Clinic and contributes to teaching and research activities across the Department of Psychology. He has served a 7 year tenure as Programme Director for the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology, overseeing the clinical training programme, delivering training in applied psychotherapeutic techniques, and leading the development of Psychologists. Research interests relate to Applied Psychology, and the factors contributing to successful mental health interventions. His work includes researching therapeutic processes, clinical interventions, and clinical judgements.

He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), a Chartered member of the British Psychological Society (Associate Fellow). 

Research interests include critical psychopathology, social constructs in psychotherapy, counselling psychology training, mental health, personal development, LGBT issues, religion & spirituality, destigmatisation and attitudes towards mental health & help-seeking.
