Ceremony celebrates staff excellence

The achievements and dedication of staff members were celebrated at the Vice-Chancellor’s annual Staff Excellence Awards.

More than 100 people attended the glittering ceremony in the Chancellor’s Hall on Tuesday, 25 June 2019 to find out which members of staff from across the University had won awards in a range of categories.

The Staff Excellence Awards, which are now in their eighth year, are nominated by staff and students and enable the University to recognise staff for their hard work, dedication and achievements.

This year, over 1,100 nominations were submitted and throughout the evening guests were able to enjoy entertainment provided by musicians Alexander Douglas (clarinet and alto saxophone) and Joel Robinson (piano). There was also a poetry performance from R. M Francis, a writer from Dudley who is also a PhD graduate from the University.

The Vice-Chancellor’s Special Award was presented to Clare Dickens, from the Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing, for her suicide and self-harm prevention work on a regional and national level.

Vice-Chancellor, Geoff Layer, said: “We value the huge contribution made by all staff, who are integral to creating an environment in which students can succeed; whatever the job role, each member of staff is vital in contributing to our presence as the University of Opportunity.

“I would like to thank all staff for their continued hard work over the last 12 months – the dedication of everyone is greatly appreciated, and those nominated should be especially proud of their achievements.”
