University working with England Athletics marathon runners

05/04/2018

England Athletics have teamed up with the University of Wolverhampton to offer the athletes on their marathon programme funded physiological testing.

Runners are being assessed in the sports science laboratory at the University’s Walsall Campus.

Profiles will be created for each athlete so that they can easily monitor progress through repeat testing over time. This will give the University the chance to build on their track record of research in endurance performance and can create case studies which will be useful in future England marathon weekend camps.

The testing will provide feedback informing the athletes training programmes, making sessions more specific to the demands of their event.

Dan Robinson who is currently studying for a PhD at the University and who is also on the marathon programme, said: “Physiological testing has long been part of a professional athlete’s preparation, but it can undoubtedly benefit developing athletes enormously in reaching the elite level.”

Professor of Sport and Learning Andy Lane said: “It’s a fantastic study that should not only produce some excellent academic publications, but importantly, be helpful for the athletes and coaches.”

Nick Anderson, England Athletics Marathon Coordinator, said “This is an amazing opportunity for the marathon group and I am encouraging all of them to take up the offer.”

He said it was a great way for athletes to move their training into very specific zones to help them progress and get the most out of their training plans.

The testing and subsequent training zones are set to be invaluable in the lead up to marathon races.

Testing is also available to other athletes with a variety of payment options available.  Please contact Dan directly on D.T.Robinson@wlv.ac.uk.
