Clegg Construction has completed a new multi-million pound development for the University of Wolverhampton which will provide high specification laboratory and workshop space for science and engineering businesses.

The £10.1m Science Centre is situated at the University of Wolverhampton Science Park in Glaisher Drive.

Work started in February 2016 on the three storey development, which has 4,000 square metres of space and features high quality offices, labs and workshops, as well as a café and space for parking.

The reinforced concrete building’s main elevation features a fully glazed atrium. Each floor offers flexible space, including future expansion offices for science-based businesses.

The building also employs low carbon technology, adopting photovoltaic panels along with exposed concrete structures to reduce energy demand in heating and cooling the building.

As part of the contract Clegg Construction also provided work experience for University of Wolverhampton students from the School of Architecture and the Built Environment.

The three students worked as part of the site management team over a number of months gaining practical experience in all aspects of Project Management including design development and commercial activities.

Simon Blackburn, Managing Director of Clegg Construction, said: “It is fantastic to see the building finished and handed over to the client ready for occupation by businesses.

“It was a great development to work on and occupies a prominent position close to Wolverhampton city centre and is very much part of the wider regeneration of the city.

“As a company we have had a lot of success in working within the Higher Education sector and this is one of a long line of amazing projects we have been involved with.”

Nigel Babb, University of Wolverhampton Science Park Commercial Director said: “It has been really exciting to see the building finished.  The new centre will offer unrivalled specialist space to scientific-based businesses wanting to develop and enhance their research and development activities.

“We think it will attract science and technology-based companies right to heart of Wolverhampton where they can grow and develop new products and processes.

“Clegg Construction has done a fantastic job in delivering it.”

The centre has been handed over to the University for final fit out and is due to be ready to accept its first new tenant in the autumn.

Clegg Construction has completed a range of projects for higher education clients over a number of years.

The contractor is currently working on a £4.5m contract to overhaul part of the Main Building at Aston University in Birmingham to create new labs for its School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, which will utilise the space for research into fibre optic communication.

Clegg Construction has completed schemes for the University of Birmingham and University of Nottingham.
