GRADUATION CASE STUDY: ALI TARIQ

14/09/2017

Talented sportsman Ali Tariq is missing his graduation ceremony – but has a very good excuse as he will be representing England at the indoor cricket world cup.

Ali, from Wolverhampton, is heading to Dubai for the 2017 World Indoor Cricket Federation (WICF) World Cup.

He will be competing for the England 21-and-under men’s team against Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, India, Singapore, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates.

The 21-year-old graduates this year after combining elite cricket with a BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science degree at the University’s Institute of Sport.

The Wolverhampton Cricket Club player said: “It feels like an honour to represent England in the sport that I love. After being brought up from a young age playing cricket, I feel I have accomplished my dream. I have always fantasised about having an official top with my name on the back and now I can’t believe this is really happening.”

He says he chose to study at the University because it was close to home and the sports facilities are excellent.

“I wanted to study this degree because I enjoyed science throughout school. Accompanied with my sport, I had no doubts about what I wanted to study.

“I don’t think I had many challenges throughout my time here, although I think I left my dissertation a little too late and ended up missing a First by 1%. But I think receiving a half colours award at the Sports Awards made up for that.”

During his studies, Ali attended Career Development Week which enables students to boost their career credentials through workshops, activities and visits.

“In my final year I attended a lecture by Steve Ingham during Career Development Week. It inspired me because he started where I am now, and went on to accomplish so much.”

Ali says he is currently committed to his cricketing career, but is considering returning to the University to work towards a teaching qualification.

The Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing graduate adds: “I’d say I’ve had a great experience at University. I’ve met some top lecturers and made some lifelong friends.”
