The Speaker of the House of Commons, the Rt Hon John Bercow MP, visited the University of Wolverhampton to tour its research facilities and to present a guest lecture.

His visit began with a tour of the University’s brain tumour research facilities within the £25m Rosalind Franklin Building.

He then presented a lecture, titled ‘The Making of a Modern Parliament’, to staff and students in the historic Chancellor’s Hall, which recently hosted BBC One’s Question Time.

Professor John Darling, Director of Healthcare and Medical Research and a leading expert in brain tumour research, said: “We were delighted to welcome such a high profile figure as The Rt Hon John Bercow MP to the University of Wolverhampton.

“Having attended meetings at Whitehall with Professor of Neuro-oncology Tracy Warr, John Bercow is aware of the University’s brain tumour research and we were keen to showcase our excellent facilities and highlight the need for further funding for this important area.”

The Rt Hon John Bercow MP was elected as Member of Parliament for Buckingham in May 1997 and became the 157th Speaker of the House of Commons in June 2009.
