Recognition for renowned researcher

22/11/2017

A University of Wolverhampton Professor has been recognised on an international list of highly cited researchers.

Professor of Information Science Mike Thelwall is an internationally-renowned researcher in cybermetrics and the listing means his work is hugely influential.

The Highly Cited Researchers list is made by an American company, Clarivate Analytics, which tracks research influence through publications. It includes scholars that are in the top one per cent for research influence in the world for over a decade in their broad disciplinary area.

The list aims to identify people that are “leading the way in solving the world’s biggest challenges”. Professor Thelwall’s area included 188 researchers from around the world.

His research exploits mathematical and computing techniques to analyse online emotions and the impact of ideas.

Professor Thelwall, who runs the University’s Statistical Cybermetrics Research Group within the School of Mathematics and Computer Science, said: “I was amazed to receive this wonderful news, which caps a fantastic year for my team. We are already planning new research directions to keep at the cutting edge of discovery.”

Earlier this year, Professor Thelwall was listed as one of the top 300 world researchers for computer science and engineering in the Shanghai rankings, the academic ranking of world universities. His research group has the highest average research impact score in their category, also in the 2017 Shanghai rankings.
