University scoops award for professional practice course

01/12/2017

The University of Wolverhampton has scooped an award for its innovative approach to providing courses tailored specifically for business.

The Architecture and Built Environment team won an award in the Quality Initiative category at EDF Energy’s Hinkley Point C (HPC) first Excellence Awards held in Bridgwater, Somerset, recently. EDF Energy is building the first new nuclear power station in the UK.

The University won the award for its delivery of a specially designed Professional Practice course for the nuclear energy provider in conjunction with the Institute of Clerk of Works Construction Inspectorate (ICWCI).

The University started to deliver the ICWCI accredited course ‘Professional Practice’ in September 2015. The course was designed in collaboration with EDF energy representatives and recognises the unique requirements of nuclear construction management. In particular EDF representatives contributed to the course delivery to ensure company strategies and ethos were fully embedded into the course structure.

Paul Hampton, Head of Architecture and the Built Environment at the University, said: “This is the first time the Professional Practice course has been delivered in-company.  EDF Energy representatives contributed to the course delivery to ensure that the company’s strategies and ethos were fully embedded into the core structure.

“As a University we believe in lifelong learning and the need for individuals to continue to develop their skills no matter what stage of their career they are at.  We are proud to be able to collaborate with partners such as EDF Energy and ICWCI and it’s wonderful to be recognised for this pioneering partnership.”

Held in Bridgwater’s McMillan Theatre, there were 20 award categories focusing on three main themes - people, supply chain and safety, and sustainability and innovation.

Nigel Cann, the project’s Delivery Director, said: “The aim of the awards was to give everyone working on the project the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of colleagues by nominating them for awards. The nominations were then shortlisted for the gala awards evening.

“It was great to see so many people from Hinkley Point C’s fantastic team gathered together to celebrate each other’s success.”
