Stafford centre opens doors at community day

01/12/2017

The University of Wolverhampton officially launched its new centre in Stafford with a packed family community day.

The new regional learning centre, known as University of Wolverhampton in Stafford (UWiS), is based within the Staffordshire Place complex in the town centre.

It offers a range of courses, tasters and events as well as providing information, advice and guidance for people interested in higher education and business support and training. The centre has two teaching rooms, social learning and meeting spaces.

The community day, held in November, featured a host of free family activities including balloon modelling, Christmas crafts, face painting, drinks tasting sessions, fingerprint keyrings and the chance to handle tarantulas and insects. Over 300 people visited the centre and enjoyed the fun learning experiences with some signing up for courses and tasters.

There was also a short performance of Stafford Gatehouse’s pantomime and a chance to win tickets.

Jackie Dunne, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Lifelong Learning at the University, said: “We’re delighted to have opened our doors right in the heart of Stafford. It’s a great location and site.

“We have been working in Stafford for a number of years now and the ambition was to have a more permanent location from which to operate and we have found it at Staffordshire Place.

“We are thrilled that so many people came to the launch and participated in the activities on Saturday and found out about the services and courses being offered by the Centre. We’ve felt very much part of the community here ever since we arrived.

“We’re excited that from the start of December we’ll be offering a range of free taster courses and then from January undergraduate, postgraduate and professional development courses.”

A series of free taster High Education sessions are being run during December giving people a chance to sample subjects such as teaching, forensic science, children’s nursing and biology.

The centre will start delivering undergraduate and postgraduate distance learning courses from January 2018. These will be in Business Management, Human Resources Management, Business Administration (MBA), Marketing, Military History and Masters by Research.

There will be Continuous Professional Development courses in marketing and computer science and short courses in writing, poetry and play writing. If you have any queries, please drop in and meet the team.

General opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm but courses will run at scheduled times that may fall outside of these.
