A healthy outlook for new Degree Apprenticeship

The University of Wolverhampton is bringing new life blood to its growing Degree Apprenticeship portfolio with the introduction of a work-based course for Healthcare Science Practitioners.

The programme, which is a professionally accredited course by the National School of Healthcare Science (Health Education England) and the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP)), is currently delivered as part of the Healthcare Science Practitioner Training programme for Cardiac Physiology and Respiratory and Sleep Physiology.

The Bachelor of Science with Honours (BSc) Degree Apprenticeship which starts in September offers two routes of study depending on the Apprentice’s job role – Cardiac Physiology or Respiratory & Sleep Physiology. The programme will be delivered at the University’s City Campus in Wolverhampton over three years with Apprentices attending the University two days per week for the first two years then one day a week in the third year.

Jenny Tonkinson-Hoare, Senior Lecturer Practitioner (Cardiac Physiology) in the University’s Department of Biomedical Science & Physiology, said:  “This exciting new work-based, innovative Degree Apprenticeship creates the opportunity for the apprentice to develop professionally and academically in order to graduate as a competent Healthcare Science Practitioner working within their chosen discipline.

“Employers can leverage the on-the-job skills of Apprentices to develop a stronger and more productive workforce in order to try and overcome the current national shortage of staff within Cardiac Physiology and Respiratory and Sleep Physiology.”

The Apprenticeship Hub – Key Facts & Protocols

  • The University of Wolverhampton has invested £500,000 in a dedicated Apprenticeship Hub, which includes a funding contribution of over £150,000 from the Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).
  •  The Apprenticeship Hub provides a one-stop destination for employers, parents and apprentices, providing access to valuable resources and support, including details on available Apprenticeship programmes covering a wide variety of trades and professions.
  •  The University of Wolverhampton’s Apprenticeship Hub was successful in its application to register for the delivery of Apprenticeships and is now on the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers (RoATP). 
  •  The University has also been successful in its applications to join the preferred supplier frameworks for Degree Apprenticeships by Shropshire County Council and NHS National Shared Business Services.
  •  The University has been awarded £250,000 funding from the Higher Education Funding Council (HEFCE) to develop and deliver a range of new Degree Apprenticeships.
  •  Almost 70 students from up and down the country are studying for the Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA) with the Faculty of Social Sciences through our three year partnership with leading public sector provider SERCO.  A further cohort of 100 SERCO students will be studying with us next year. 
  • As well as CMDA from September, the University will be offering Higher and Degree Apprenticeships in Construction Management with pathways for Civil Engineering & Built Environment, Chartered Surveying, Digital Technology Solutions Professional, Engineering and the Chartered Legal Executive.
  • Future Degree Apprenticeships will include Healthcare Science Practitioner, Policing, Social Work, Nursing and Paramedic Degree Apprenticeships.
