Lecturer gives insight into life of wartime lieutenant

15/09/2015

A history visiting lecturer will give a fascinating insight into the life of a young First World War Army Lieutenant when she speaks at a conference later this year.

Dr Phylomena Badsey, a visiting lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton, has examined letters and poems written by and for Lt Roland Aubrey Leighton, who died in 1915 from wounds received while leading a wiring party. He had served in France on the Western Front for nine months.

Three women write about him; his mother, sister and the woman to whom he was engaged during the war, Vera Brittain.

Dr Badsey said: “All three, who each played a fundamental role in his life, describe him from their different perspectives in their published works. Only in his poems written on the Western Front do we hear his voice, as he seeks to explain his experiences of war.

“As we approach the 100 anniversary of Roland’s death it is important that his unique voice is heard once again.”

She will speak at the Western Front Association Conference – 1915 – 100 years on -at the University of Worcester on October 17.
