University welcomes Choirmaster Gareth Malone for BBC show

06/10/2015

Musical maestro Gareth Malone paid a visit to the University of Wolverhampton as part of his latest TV series, using its cutting edge facilities to get singers performance-ready.

Gareth turned the Performance Hub, at Walsall Campus, into A Capella School, for BBC’s The Naked Choir.

The final six choirs trained intensively with experts for four days at the Hub before performing in front of the judges and an invited audience in the Black Box Theatre.

Following the performance the remaining five choirs returned to A Capella School to prepare for the next week.

Neil Reading Venue Manager for the Performance Hub, said: “It was fantastic to have Gareth Malone and the team with us. The choirs used the whole of the Performance Hub, taking advantage of several of our studio spaces to bring their performances to life.”

Gareth is no stranger to the University. He unveiled the plaque for the official opening of the Performance Hub in 2011 and directed a performance by the University Chamber Choir.

he Performance Hub is one of the most impressive performing arts buildings in the country.
It houses teaching and rehearsal spaces and includes performance areas, a theatre space, green room, music rooms, a Virtual Technology facility and staff offices.
