University proud to sponsor Wolverhampton Pride
The University of Wolverhampton is one of the key sponsors for this weekend’s annual equality and diversity event in the city.
Wolverhampton Pride takes place on Saturday (Oct 3) and the sponsorship outlines the University’s support for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) community.
The University is the title sponsor of the Transform Your Life area which aims to empower individuals around academic and career development.
Members of the University will be on hand to speak to participants on how the University can support individuals of different backgrounds or circumstances to fulfil their potential and realise their career ambitions.
Dr Sammy Li, Chair of the University of Wolverhampton LGBT Staff Network, said: “Being the largest organisation and employer in the city, the long-standing support from the University is particularly crucial to this Wolverhampton event. This demonstrates our commitment to promoting an inclusive campus environment as the University of Opportunity.”
Jon Elsmore, Dean of Students, added, “At the University, one of our core values is to be inclusive and fair – through which we are proud to support and celebrate our LGBT community.”
Steve Neville-Wu, Senior Lecturer of Learning Disability Nursing and Vice-Chair of the University’s LGBT Staff Network, will also be delivering two workshops on widening access to Higher Education and demonstrating self-awareness at the Wolves Pride Inside.
The University also recently tendered its submission to the 2016 Stonewall Workplace Equality Index. A number of equality and diversity initiatives will be launched in the coming academic year to help work towards our strategic goal of becoming the UK’s Top 100 employers in the Index.
Martha Bishop, Chief Executive of LGBT Network Wolverhampton, said: “We are delighted to continue to work in partnership with University of Wolverhampton to support LGBT students and the wider LGBT community across The Black Country.
"The University is working hard to ensure the needs of LGBT people, both students and staff, are considered. It is heart-warming to see such a well-respected, local organisation is so determined to make a real difference to the lives of LGBT people.”
Pride Inside takes place from 1pm on Saturday October 3 at Network House, School Street, home of LGBT Wolverhampton.
