Lecturer to debate migrant human trafficking at international conference

An expert on human trafficking from the University of Wolverhampton will debate the current threats to migrants at a conference in Luxembourg this week.

Participating in the ‘Frontex: Legal Questions and Current Controversies’ conference at the University of Luxembourg on Friday 27 November, Matilde Ventrella, Senior Lecturer in Law, was invited to be part of the panel discussion on the ongoing migrant crisis by the University’s Research Unit in Law.

“Many migrants are at threat of human trafficking, including the routes from Turkey to Greece and Libya to Italy,” said Ventrella. “They are leaving their countries as they have no other choice, due to extremist violence or economic reasons.

“Forced into being smuggled out, migrant families will often be broken up and not only face perilous journeys across the sea – for those who make it across, many will end up in slave labour or being sexually exploited.”

Conference delegates will include academics from UK and European universities, experts in immigration, international law and policy makers. The conference will examine the various legal issues concerning the role of Frontex, the European agency for the coordination of operations at the external borders of the EU, and its activities. The discussion panels will cover the agency’s operational mandate and international activities, and question its position as an actor on the global arena.
