Flying high with the Cosford Air Show

University of Wolverhampton experts will be sharing their insights into the history and science by taking part in this year’s RAF Cosford Air Show.

The University is sponsoring this Sunday’s sell-out event, which takes place at RAF Cosford in Shropshire on Sunday, 14June from 8.30am – 7pm.

As part of it’ s aim to support the RAF Cosford Air Show, the university will also be involved in the range of activities that have been planned for the day.

Staff and students from the University will take part in radio talks with Radio Cosford on theme of VE Day and host fun activities explaining Science and Engineering behind Aviation.

There will also be demonstrations and talks about what the University has to offer prospective future students and on some of the institution’s current projects.

The Cosford  Air  Show  is the first of the RAF’s annual air shows. It displays a mixture of RAF aircrafts and an aerial tribute commemorating the war times with an array of models. 

Director of Engineering at the University of Wolverhampton’s School of Engineering, Dr Paul Lister, said: “The Faculty of science and engineering is proud to be supporting Cosford in this fantastic event.

“On Sunday we will be showcasing what projects the university’s £250 million investment will be supporting, this includes the new Business School, Springfield Campus and Telford campus as well as new courses and developments for the departments.

“We want to show everyone the vision that we have put together to really shape up a bright future for the university and how it’s widening its horizons and creating new and big opportunities for people in the region”

Student projects will also feature heavily in the Air Show such as the human powered flight project and the Formula Renault Racing Team.

The planned exhibits aim to profile how students at the University of Wolverhampton are being encouraged to increase their employability prospects as well as gain industry experience and skills the industry through involvements in big projects and developments that the university invests in.

Faculty of Engineering student and member of the Human powered flight project team, Paul Whitehouse, said:“We will be running an exhibition at the Cosford Air Show to promote the University of Wolverhampton’s “Human Powered Flight Project”

"The aim of the Human Powered Flight Project is for a team of students to design, build and fly a pedal powered aircraft.

“Project Leader Fran Bumpus and I will be on hand to answer any questions the public may have about the project itself or the engineering courses on offer at the university.

“We will also have with us a scale model of our craft, the “Guilfoyle Flying-Wolf” along with a sample wing section.

“We are very much looking forward to representing the university and our hardworking team at the show and being able to showcase what our team and faculty has to offer potential future students”.

The RAF Cosford Air Show is the largest aviation event in the West Midlands and is renowned for the huge variety of attractions.

This year’s Air Show main theme will be VE70 and organisers will be re-creating the look and atmosphere of 1945 in a Victory Village containing music, food, vehicles and exhibitions of the era.

The event is holding an advanced ticket only purchase policy.
