The Academy provides language and study skills support for overseas students, as well as social and cultural activities.

This includes an International Foundation Year, Pre-Masters courses, teacher training and summer and short courses.

Although it has been up and running for a year, a formal launch event took place this week to raise awareness about its successful work and celebrate achievements so far.

Invited guests, including partners from the UK and overseas, enjoyed a diverse range of music from a steel band to a string quartet, and watched cultural dancing, as well as having the chance to have a henna tattoo.

They also listened to a presentation about the work of the University’s Centre for International Development and Training and a workshop from Italian students about the Industrial Revolution.

Lynne Leighton-Johnstone, Principal of the International Academy, said: “We are delighted with the success of the International Academy so far. Our aim is to provide a home from home for all international students and offers exciting activities and excellent support.

“We want to give students a real insight into life in England and immerse them not only in the English language but also cultural activity.

“We are building some fantastic relationships and are looking forward to even more visitors in the coming year both from Europe and further afield such as China.

“The University has a thriving international community and aims to provide opportunities for all.”guests at the celebration event
