Innovative nursing teaching shortlisted for award
Collaborative teaching has led to the University of Wolverhampton being shortlisted for a national nursing education award.
The University is listed for the Teaching Innovation of the Year in the Student Nursing Times Awards 2015.
Senior Mental Health Nursing Lecturer Alison Geeson from the Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing, is being recognised for her approach to teaching.
She Leads sessions involving “Expert Patient Panels” from whom student nurses can learn about real patient experiences and how people manage and cope with their condition.
This collaborative approach includes students, service users and experts working together. It provides a good learning experience for students, which has a positive impact on patient care.
She said: “Student nurses have been very positive about the session, saying it has made them think about their approach to listening to the patient in practice. I now have a network of students who are championing the collaborative teaching approach.”
Head of Mental Health Nursing, Sheila Dixon said: “I am thrilled that the work we are doing has been shortlisted and am very much looking forward to the Awards ceremony. The collaborative work that has been done between students, members of the SUCCESS group and academics is commendable. It builds on the work we have developed over the past 5 years to strengthen the partnership we have embedded within our nursing curriculum to ensure the service user/carer voice is heard and that students learn to acknowledge, respect and act on that ‘voice’
The Awards are being held at the Hilton Hotel in London on May 7.
