International Nurses Day

The University’s Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing held an event on
12 May to celebrate the contribution of student nurses and educators to the nursing profession.

The celebration took place in the University’s Mary Seacole Building, led by Senior Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing, Alison Geeson and colleagues from the nursing team in partnership with the Royal College of Nursing.  

The University held a ‘drop-in’ style event where by guests could meet and chat at different points throughout the day.

Over 100 nurses and colleagues attended the event, sharing their pride and experiences throughout their profession.

Patients were also welcome to share personal stories about positive nursing care they have received.

Those who attended the event, participated in a number of activities including; a ‘nurses day’ word search, a display on nursing history and a ‘nurses day hope tree’, whereby nurses filled in a tag with their hopes for the future of the nursing profession.

One nurse wrote ‘I hope future nurses will enjoy nursing as much as I have; bringing solace, reducing fear and pain.’

Alison Geeson said “I feel so proud that we have held an event to celebrate International Nurses Day which has been so successful.

“At times of great challenge it is important to recognise what is good about the Nursing Profession.

“It is especially rewarding to have led an event in partnership with colleagues from the RCN which was so well attended by caring and compassionate student nurses.  

“I would like to say a final Happy Nurses Day to all nurses out there!”

Nurses Day marks the anniversary of Florence Nightingales birthday and provides an opportunity for nurses to celebrate their profession and share their positive stories.
