University’s Former Army Officer Awarded

Lieutenant Colonel Helen Lloyd Wildman, is the University Registrar and Secretary at the University of Wolverhampton and will be presented with a Veterans’ Award on Armed Forces’ Day.

Armed Forces’ Day, which takes place at Himley Hall, Dudley on Sunday 29 June,  provides an opportunity for the UK public to show their appreciation for  the contribution made by HM Armed Forces.

The Veterans’ Awards will be presented to former members of the armed forces to recognise their commitment, honour and duty during their service. 

Helen said: “I am delighted to be receiving this award and for being recognised for my 23 years’ service in the Army. Although I have retired from the forces, I continue to champion the provision of educational opprotunities for armed forces personnel and their families.

“At the University of Wolverhampton, we are dedicated to providing opportunities to all students including the armed forces.

“We recognise the unique circumstances that armed forces life entails and which sometimes make it difficult for service personnel and their families to pursue their educational goals. 

“We therefore go that extra mile to remove those barriers to study and to offer them the opportunity to realise their ambitions.”

The University of Wolverhampton is set to support the Corporate Covenant, creating a stable relationship between the University and the armed forces. The commitment encompasses areas of life including education, medical matters, accommodation, and family employment.

Helen joined the army in 1982 and served worldwide during her time in the forces, including an operational tour in Afghanistan, where she led the media operation and was a spokesperson for the International Security and Assistance Force.

Lietenant Colonel Wildman is married to Ivan, a former Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery, who will also be receiving his Veterans’ Award on the day.

Ivan and Helen met whilst they were both serving in Germany, Helen added; “Having undertaken 23 house moves in 30 years of married life, we both understand only to well, how disruptive Army life can be.”

Since leaving the forces in 2004, Helen has pursued a career in Higher Education and is now a senior member of staff at the University of Wolverhampton.

The University will also be attending the event on Sunday to provide information, advice and guidance to all prospective students, including armed forces and their families.
