University student volunteering success


Volunteer Jack GuishardJack Guishard, who has completed his final year studying for a degree in Medical Science, has been presented with this year’s ‘Volunteer of the Year Award.’

The 21 year old, won the highly prestigious award for his contribution during his time volunteering with the British Red Cross.

His role involved undertaking first aid tasks, emergency response and ambulance support duties across Staffordshire, Warwickshire and the West Midlands.

The dedicated student also scooped the University of Wolverhampton ‘Certificate of Excellence’ for his sustained commitment to volunteering over the course of his degree.  

Jack has accumulated over 912 hours and is continuing to support his various initiatives.

Over 150 students and graduates received awards in a range of 10 different categories including;Student Employee of the Year, Graduate Intern Award, Graduate STEP Award, Volunteer of the Year Award and many more.

The University has strong links with over 200 volunteer-led groups to large national charities including; British Heart Foundation, Barnardo's and Girls Guiding UK who offer opportunities to students.  

Simon Brandwood, Head of Careers, Enterprise and Employment Services, said: “Each individual student has impressed us every year with their enthusiasm and commitment to volunteering and this year is no exception.

“Volunteering gives students the opportunity to develop their skills, whilst furthering their knowledge alongside their academic studies.

“Volunteering is a great way for students not only to give something back to the local community but also help them remain competitive in the job market.”

Since 2008, university students have contributed over £2 million pounds worth of hours of volunteering to the local community which benefit both the student and local businesses.

The Midcounties Co-operative kindly sponsored the ‘Volunteer of the Year Award’ for the sixth year running.
