University lecturer directs epic show

Peter Cann has directed ‘A World beyond Man’ which is set to hit the stage on July 23 at the University’s Arena Theatre.

‘A World beyond Man’ is based on a true story of ice and polar bears, determination and betrayal, adventure and death.

The talented lecturer said: “The play ‘A World beyond Man’ is a tour de force for writer and actor, creating epic theatre in small spaces.

“The actor has to populate the stage with characters and convey a sense of different spaces using just his own voice and body and the manipulation of pieces of wood and cloth.”

Peter has previously worked with Stephanie Dale, writer of ‘A World beyond Man’ as guest director when directing her play ‘The Witches' Promise.’

The drama lecturer has also recently returned from Dublin where he has directed ‘A Malady of Migration’ for Talking Birds Theatre at the new theatre in city’s Temple Bar.

Peter has worked as a part-time drama lecturer for the past eight years, whilst working in the theatre industry as a writer and director.

Since 1980, his work has been produced by companies such as; Birmingham Rep, Shared Experience, Welsh National Opera, Absolute Theatre, BBC Radio 4, Channel 4 Television, The Resurrectionists, and The Theatre Royal Northampton. 

Since the late 1990s Peter took his skills global by directing productions in Portugal, South Africa, Korea and Jamaica.

Peter’s international work still continues and he is set to return to Portugal for his next play in 2015.

‘A World beyond Man’ will be showcased on July 23 at 7:30 pm at the University’s Arena Theatre, Wulfruna Street.

The tour continues to Mac in Birmingham on the July 24 and The little theatre in Chester on July 25.

The play will also be playing for two weeks at ‘The Sweet Venues’ as part of The Edinburgh Fringe Festival from July 31.
