Girls invited to engineer career at University

Secondary school pupils from Coppice Performing Arts School, in Wolverhampton, are being invited to learn more about engineering as a career to try and boost numbers of female employees in the sector.

The youngsters – studying on design and technology courses - will be able to talk to women employed in engineering roles and learn more about higher education options.

The workshop will encourage students with an interest in science to consider pursuing these interests at A-level and beyond, in an effort to address current skills gaps in the region.

The event will take place on Friday, January 17, from 9.30am, at the University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, in Telford.

Throughout the day, the girls will be able to hear talks about engineering, about university life and discuss career options with experts and look at some of the equipment available at the university.

Dr Petula Nurse, head of Outreach and Community Engagement in science, technology, engineering and maths subjects at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “This is a great opportunity to promote women in engineering and develop a new generation of professionals at a time when women remain an under-represented group in engineering.

“This workshop will allow the girls to meet women in the field and learn more about some of the most relevant technical challenges in engineering today.

“This event once again shows that, as the University of Opportunity, we aim to offer students as much of a chance as possible to break into different industries, while at the same time helping to forge strong links with local business.”
