University Governor wins National Achiever Award

Martin Chambers, Framework Director at the West Midlands based contractor Shaylor Group, won the top award at a ceremony held in London in November.Martin Chambers

Having previously taken the same title at the West Midlands ceremony in April, Martin progressed to the finals of the National Awards. In the final run-off he faced stiff competition from the other regional winners.

Born in Manchester, Martin Chambers became an adopted son of the West Midlands after graduating from Aston University in 1981. Based locally since then, his career includes leading some of the region and country’s most prolific construction businesses and projects, many of which have had a transformational impact on both the West Midlands economy and the wider construction industry. Having entered the industry as a sponsored trainee with George Wimpey, he has gone on to oversee and manage a number of companies, major projects and national programmes of work.

Martin was recognised for having played a pivotal role in the Chartered Institute of Building, being its Global President in 2007/8, being a former Chair of Birmingham’s Family Housing Association and director of West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence and its successor organisation MCCE. Chambers also has strong links with academia as a governor of the University of Wolverhampton, external examiner with Aston University and a visiting professor at the University of Westminster. Chambers continues to achieve success by taking a leading role in the successful repositioning of Shaylor Group plc as one of the country’s most sought after SME contractors.

Speaking of his success Martin said: “I am honoured to receive such a coveted award, particularly considering the calibre of the other finalists. Having a genuine passion for improving the construction industry nationally has obviously been a key factor of my success and I will endeavour to continue making a positive difference through my various roles and the invaluable support provided by Shaylor Group.”
