Student dancer reaches world championship final

Dance student, Sophie Webb has succeeded in obtaining second place in this year’s World 10 dance championships for her talents in ballroom dancing.

The award-winning dancer has travelled to worldwide destinations representing her country through dancing in competitions based in; Moldova, Italy, France, Iceland and Norway.

Sophie, from Wolverhampton said: “Achieving second place was amazing as we were sure we were going to be third! The world champions from last year were placed behind us in third place.

“We were also very close to winning the event which is such an amazing feeling.”

Frances Clarke, Course Leader for BA (Hons) Dance at the University said: “We would like to congratulate Sophie on her outstanding success.

“The World 10 Championship requires competitors to dance in ten different Latin and Ballroom dance styles, so to achieve world-level excellence in all these styles is a superb achievement.”

Sophie, aged 21 began dancing at the age of five and has been competing in global competitions since the age of 15.

Sophie and her dance partner Freythor Ossurarson compete in many worldwide competitions throughout the year including; The world championships in Disneyland Paris, The Dutch Open held in Holland and the British Open held in Blackpool Winter Gardens.

With over 100 medals and trophies, Sophie and Freythor have been invited to compete in another competition and training week in San Francisco next year.

The ambitious dancers aim to become world 10 dance champions next year and then become world professional ballroom champions in the future.
