Wolves star helps launch University sports pitch

Wolves legend Jody Craddock gave students a lesson in goalscoring at the launch of a new sports pitch. The University of Wolverhampton has completed work on the Sports Zone, an all-weather outdoor court for student use.

It is situated on North Road, in the grounds of the University’s Lomas Street Halls of Residence, and is secured with pass-entry locks.

With goals and basketball hoops, the court can be used for a variety of sports by students and staff at the University and was this week officially opened at a special event.

Former Wolves centre-back Jody Craddock joined students, members of the University’s sports teams, teaching staff and local radio station Signal 107 for the event.

Craddock took part in a penalty shoot-out, which also featured a sure-footed display from the University’s Vice Chancellor, Geoff Layer, who tucked all three of his penalties neatly away.

The Sports Zone has cost about £250,000 and there are plans to install a fitness trail around its perimeter.

It will be open from 10am to 9pm every day and will also be used as the venue for a football league and a Cardio Blast exercise programme.

Vice Chancellor Geoff Layer said: “The idea behind the Sports Zone was to give students somewhere they could play sports informally, for fun and recreation.

“There are no booking or fees and there are flood lights for when the nights get darker. The convenience of the location and the ease of use means students can re-invigorate their fitness plans and put some sport into their university life.”
