Mentoring challenge for Uni students

Students at the University of Wolverhampton are boosting their future job prospects by acting as mentors at a Walsall college.

More than 20 students from the School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure are volunteering as mentors for Pre-Apprenticeship learners from Walsall Adult and Community College (WACC).

The University students are working towards an Award in Mentoring which will enhance their employability and enable them to develop practical skills as mentors.

Karen Bill, Associate Dean Research and Enterprise, said: “This is a truly innovative partnership and is a win-win for our students as well as the College.

“It provides opportunities for our students to make a difference in the community and to act as role models, and inspires WACC students to think about higher education at the University.

“It also provides an opportunity for School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure students across the breadth of the degree programmes to work collaboratively which could lead to further initiatives.”

Karen added that following this pilot scheme, they hoped to deliver other similar programmes during the year and explore how this could be linked to the University’s Careers and Employment services.

The University students are studying courses such as sport and exercise science, event and venue management, popular music, dance, sport management, drama, tourism management, physical activity exercise and health and physical education.
