Hardworking students who volunteer and work alongside their studies have been recognised at a University of Wolverhampton awards ceremony.
The Employment and Volunteering Awards are an annual event at the University to celebrate students’ achievements.
This year’s winner of the Volunteer of the Year Award was Natalie Vaughan, from Wolverhampton, who volunteered with Trail-Blazers. Her role involved mentoring young offenders and assisting with new mentor training.
Jessica Corfield, from Shrewsbury, was presented with the Wolverhampton Student Employee of the Year Award. Jessica was nominated for her work with Mouchel, which included working as a site supervisor on a Highways scheme. On her nomination form, the company described her as “always going the extra mile”.
Simon Brandwood, Head of Careers and Employment Services, said: “I would like to
congratulate all of our winners for their hard work and dedication to win these awards. Volunteering and gaining work experience, whether it is paid or unpaid, is an excellent way of developing skills and qualities that can’t fail to impress any future graduate employer.”
Over 115 people attended the Employment and Volunteering Awards on 10 May 2012, and other awards included International Student Volunteer of the Year and On-Campus Student Employee of the Year.
Since launching the Volunteering Certificate in 2008/9, over 1,913 students have gained recognition for their volunteering activity. Since 2008/9 the total number of volunteering hours was 92,524; this equates to an estimated cost of £1,377,051 if the hours were paid for.
This is the fourth year The Volunteer of the Year Award has been sponsored by The Midcounties Co-operative and the second year the Wolverhampton Student Employee of the Year Awards were sponsored by Enterprise rent-a-car.
