Sports stars celebrated

The achievements of students who have excelled at sport during their time at the University of Wolverhampton have been celebrated at a special event.

More than 150 people attended the annual Sports Awards at Walsall Football Club, which recognise individuals and teams who have been successful this academic year.

The guest speaker at the ceremony was triple Olympian Christina Boxer, who competed in the 1980, 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games and claimed gold in the 1500m at the 1982 Commonwealth Games.

The Sportsperson of the Year award went to BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science student Jarryd Dunn, who recently won the 400m at the British Universities and College Sport (BUCS) Indoor Athletics Championships.

Other winners included the Women’s Football team, who won Club of the Year, and netball coach Stacie Cooper, who was named Coach of the Year.

Team skippers were presented with captains’ colours and students were presented with Player’s Player awards, which are voted for by their teammates.

The ceremony also recognised students who will receive scholarships in recognition of sporting achievement.

Director of Sport, Mike Chamberlain, said: “We have many high performing sports men and women at the University, and the awards evening is an opportunity to celebrate their success and show how much the University supports and recognises their achievements.

“Since the evening another student, Tom Gregory, has won gold in the British University Cycling Championships, and there will be a large team of athletes competing in the Olympic Stadium at a 2012 Test Event in May, with a number of medal prospects.”

The event on 21 March was also attended by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Geoff Layer, and representatives from the University’s School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure.
