British forces children on fact finding mission

Students from an armed forces school in Germany are visiting the University of Wolverhampton to find out more about higher education opportunities.

A group of 11 pupils from the Gloucester Secondary School in Hohne, Germany will be visiting the University in a specially arranged event on Monday 9 July 2012.

The school has more than 500 pupils and supports service children from the Hohne Station, one of the British Forces’ main bases in Germany.

The visit is part of the University of Wolverhampton’s wider work aimed at working with service personnel and their families who may wish to relocate or retrain.

Pro Vice-Chancellor Helen Wildman, who chairs the University’s MOD committee and was formerly a Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army, said: “Children of services personnel abroad often find it difficult to access higher education and have the opportunity to see up close what a university is like or what it can offer.

“These students will spend a full day at the University and get a detailed overview of the courses which are available to suit their area of interest.

“I think it’s really important for us to engage with the services personnel community in this way, particularly at a difficult time when restructuring is taking place and some people are losing their jobs.”

The group will be visiting both the University’s Wolverhampton and Walsall campuses.
