Students to design a vision for the future

Students have been tasked with creating a new vision for a Birmingham entertainment venue as part of a design challenge.

Year 12 students from Wednesfield High School in Wolverhampton have been asked to create a ‘vision for the future’ for Star City.

The School is working with Star City Entertainment and partners from the University of Wolverhampton, Wolverhampton Homes and Thomas Vale Construction on the project.

The challenge will see the pupils undertake a bespoke project focused on designing a new vision for Star City that further increases the popularity and attractiveness of the complex during daytime and evening. This will provide the students with a real life opportunity to work on a project brief designed by an external client.

The design competition will form part of the students’ curriculum and the aim is to allow free thinking to create and develop the future vision of Star City.

The final submissions will be judged at the end of term by a panel of expert judges and prizes will be donated by all the partners. An award ceremony is due to be held in the StarCity Vue cinema Gold Glass lounge.

Mrs Leanne Mee, Assistant Headteacher at Wednesfield High, said: “This is a truly unique opportunity for our students to work so closely with an external client and get hands-on experience of how a designer would operate in the real world.”

Paul Hampton, from the University’s School of Technology, said the external partners were all delighted to be working with such enthusiastic students, and were looking forward to viewing the ideas, concepts and visions they create.

The client’s brief was presented to staff and students at the school by Mark Wilson, General Manager of Star City Entertainment. Advice about strategic and technical requirements were provided by the expert panel Shaun Aldis and Wilson Severn from Wolverhampton Homes; Paul Hampton from the University of Wolverhampton and Tim Fairbairn, Business Development Manager from Thomas Vale Construction.
