The lecture is organised by the in partnership with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). It will take place at the University’s Telford Campus on Tuesday, 11 November 2008 from 6pm.

This year’s lecture is titled “New ways of working for new economic times”. Brendan Barber will investigate how in these turbulent economic times, new, and more innovative ways of working represent a compelling alternative to the traditional model of corporate cost-cutting.

He will also discuss how employers and unions can work together on issues such as flexibility, skills and productivity. Brendan will look at the wider political context and the need for Government to promote fairness.

Professor Dominic Wilson, Dean of the University of Wolverhampton Business School, said: "We are delighted to have Brendan speaking at this time of world wide financial and economic challenge. However these dramatic events unfold, there will be profound implications for the future management of organisations already striving to adapt to longer-term trends in the socio-economic environment. The rapidly evolving union movement is a central force in shaping this future."

Gerwyn Jones, Wolverhampton Branch Chair from the Chartered Management Institute, said: “The Crystal Lecture is always an excellent event for networking and an entertaining speaker, which in recent years has attracted over 250 attendees and high profile speakers. This year’s event is no exception and promises to be an informative event, with such a prominent speaker, in Brendan Barber. People are the most important asset to any organisation and any new ideas or initiatives that attendees can take away from this event, will be of value.”

The 2008 lecture is the 15th annual Crystal Lecture. The Chartered Management Institute hosts two such events each year, the other being the Maclaren Lecture at Aston University.
