Conference highlights domestic violence

18/11/2008

The Rt. Hon Margaret Moran MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Domestic Violence, will be speaking at Moving Forward on Tuesday, 25 November 2008.

The University has joined forces with Ashram Housing Association to host the event at Wolverhampton Science Park, which aims to address the provision of culturally competent domestic violence services across the country.

Professor Jim Waddington, Director of the University’s History and Governance Research Institute, said: “This conference aims to give professionalsthe opportunity to shape the future of culturally competent domestic violence services that will benefit women throughout the country.

“Research shows that women from ethnic minority backgrounds are less likely to access services and then struggle with the services they do receive when they seek help. The barriers to culturally competent services are wide ranging and key areas will be explored in detail by individuals who are leaders in their field.”

Other high profile keynote speakers include Nicki Norman, Deputy Chief Executive of Women’s Aid England; Chief Constable Brian Moore, Domestic Violence Lead at the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO); Ceri Hayes, Head of Policy & Advocacy, Womankind Worldwide and Avantika Hari, Writer & Director of “Land, Gold, Women”, a film on honour killings.

The event takes place on the United Nations designated Elimination of Violence against Women Day and is supported by a wide range of national organisations working within the field of domestic violence.
